Ahh. Conspiracy theories. Don't buy it. A franchise that has an assistant GM vying for either of these vacant GM jobs will not hold the guy back from bettering himself, career-wise or financially. It'll only cause problems, on both a personal and professional level. If Peter Chiarelli has any inkling that Benning is a front runner for one of these jobs, he certainly isn't going to want Benning completing any type of due diligence, scouting-wise for the B's. He's going to want to get Benning as far away from his organization as fast as possible. For lack of a better phrase, call it a conflict of interest.

GM will be announced soon, imo.

It's plain and simple why it has taken LaFontaine this long to choose his GM, he is doing his due diligence and not taking the Darcy approach when it came to Darcy hiring a coach. There was no need to rush the process because at this point of the season having a GM in place wasn't as important as come the new year when the tournaments, Olympics and trade dead line come up.
With Calgary entering the GM fray, Buffalo should be far ahead in interviews. I have to feel the Calgary job comes with more pressure just for the fact you will have Burke peering over your shoulder all the time,,,it's an opportunity to learn from one of the best yet you know it will be hard to really build the team how you see fit.

The Buffalo job has appeal

1) You have an owner who is willing to spend to the cap
2) You aren't stuck with many contracts with movement clauses (2 I think)
3) You will have a full compliment of compliance buy outs to use
4) at least 3 #1's in the next 2 drafts, 6 seconds
5) trade bait in Miller, Moulson and Ott to either acquire both picks or prospects
6) the blueline cupboard is not bare...3 good prospects in Ristolainen,Zadorov and McCabe. Nolan has Myers rounding back to his rookie year form and a steady youngster in Pysyk.

I personally prefer Benning...he has learned under Peter Chiarelli who has had Boston in contention every year other then his first as a GM. He is familiar with Buffalo as he was in the Sabres scouting department for 10 yrs before going to Boston. LaFontaine has mentioned Boston as a model to build a team, Benning has been there helping Chiarelli build the Bruins.

As far as holding someone back because of the draft is hogwash as the draft is 6 full months away and I doubt any team is going to hold someone back from a job promotion.

As outlined in the original blog, this job is a dream job for pretty much any GM that really wants to make his mark on an organization or the league. You have an interim coach. Don't like him? Bring your own in next year. You have more cap room to deal with than you could likely even spend in an off season, and you have an incredible amount of draft picks. You have an owner that will write you a blank check to spend any amount of money on day one and seems to be, for the most part, hands off in terms of coach/players and has hired an incredible amount of scouts.

If you are a GM trying to prove yourself and make a mark on the league/organization, its everything you could possibly want. If you fail in this position in say, 5-7 years, you didn't deserve to be a GM in the first place.
